ROBOCAP & Glocestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Robot launch event

On 20 June 2014, ROBOCAP Trustees and ROBOCAP Patron Dame Janet Trotter presented Dr Frank Harsent, Chief Executive, GHNHSFT, with a cheque for £350,000 towards the purchase price of £1.2 million for a Da Vinci surgical robot machine for use in prostate cancer surgery. ROBOCAP have worked since 2009 to raise money with the objective of providing this equipment.

The robot was delivered on 14 March 2014, and following intensive training, 18 operations have now been carried out at Cheltenham General Hospital using the new equipment. Some of the men, whose treatment was carried out over the last few weeks using the robot, were at the event.

Everyone then gathered on the steps of the hospital for photographs.

Then was an opportunity to have a look at the new equipment and for the Consultants to demonstrate the features. There was also the chance to sit at the surgeon’s console, look through the viewfinder and use the controls in a simulator program.

It is a very impressive piece of equipment, and the Consultants are very excited to have it.

We are determined to keep up with developing technologies in order to make sure we continue to deliver the very best for our patients”

Not all the Trustees were able to attend the launch event, but the efforts of all should be acknowledged.
